Why O Romeo Took Ten Years: Vishal Bhardwaj Opens Up About Creative Delays and Industry Challenges

The film O Romeo existed as an unreleased project for almost ten years, which became a topic of discussion throughout Bollywood because people wanted to know why it never reached theaters. Director Vishal Bhardwaj revealed that the extended time period required for the project development occurred because he needed more time to develop the project compared to the original plan. He obtained story rights but chose to develop the story material through complete immersion instead of beginning quick development work. He dedicated multiple years to narrative development work by testing various tonal approaches while he evaluated whether the film maintained its original emotional and cinematic impact. He explained his extended period of contemplation developed from his personal connection to the narrative because he wanted to maintain the story’s artistic authenticity.

Creative Rethinks and Financial Challenges

Bhardwaj acknowledged that the initial idea of the project required additional rewriting together with complete structural revisions because its original form no longer matched current standards. The filmmakers faced budget challenges because their movie production requirements grew larger during the filming process. The initial production requirements of the project grew into a need for bigger film sets together with more complex production elements to properly show its entire fictional universe. The project required additional financial support because its goals exceeded existing resources. The film project received a boost in progress when producer Sajid Nadiadwala joined the team because he brought essential funds that enabled the movie to become a grander theatrical experience. Bhardwaj used the partnership to keep his artistic control while working with a filmmaking team that developed his story at a suitable level of production.

A Creative Reunion with Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor plays the role of Romeo Ustara in the film, who serves as the main character for the movie O Romeo. The film marks another chapter in Bhardwaj and Kapoor’s long-standing creative partnership, which includes acclaimed titles like Kaminey, Haider, and Rangoon. Bhardwaj addressed the persistent rumors about their creative conflicts by explaining that both artists share a professional relationship that fosters their artistic work. The actors developed their performances through each other’s creative challenges because this process created authentic and intricate emotional expressions.

Controversy and Legal Attention

The film brought back public interest, which created legal investigations of its content. The family of Hussain Ustara, whose life partly inspired elements of the story, issued a legal notice claiming the portrayal was unauthorized. Bhardwaj explained that O Romeo is an adaptation of the journalist Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, which the filmmakers had legally obtained rights to. The film combines real-life elements with fictional storytelling, according to him, which creates a creative method that has generated a dispute between artistic expression and proper cinematic portrayal.

Anticipation Builds Toward Release

The film O Romeo features an ensemble cast that includes Tripti Dimri, Disha Patani, Avinash Tiwary, Vikrant Massey, Farida Jalal, and Tamannaah Bhatia, who will present a story that combines romantic elements with criminal activities and emotional disputes in the setting of Mumbai’s criminal underworld. The film will premiere in theaters on 13 February 2026 after it experienced multiple development delays and script changes and gained public interest. The project is expected to be one of the most eagerly watched Bollywood releases of the year due to its bumpy journey and notable cast.
