Kunal Kamra calls out Ranveer Allahbadia for clout chasing amid Latent row

Stand-up comic Kunal Kamra, on Wednesday, took a sharp dig at YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia by calling him a “contraceptive for creativity” and accusing him of “milking” the controversy around India’s Got Latent. The exchange came after Allahbadia shared an X post about how a large part of his career as a YouTuber was shaken due to the Latent controversy, where he faced legal charges for making crass jokes about parental sex.

Allahbadia reflected on the situation on X. He wrote, “It took me and my team 10 years to build BeerBiceps and The Ranveer Show to where they were. And in one incident, a large part of it was shaken (sic).”

He added that the phase reminded him of a Kabir couplet, noting, “A simple reminder that growth takes time, and so does rebuilding (sic).”

Kamra, 37, quickly responded to ranveer’s post, calling out what he saw for an one-sided narrative and highlighted the larger impact of the Latent controversy on the stand-up community.

Referring to the wider fallout, he wrote, “30+ artists including me were summoned by authorities for being on Latent. The whole comedy fraternity took a hit because of how stupid you’re 9 (sic).”

The comedian explained how the entire stand-up circuit took a hit claiming that the controversy affected several performers beyond those directly involved.

He said that “shows were cancelled, venues pulled out and judgments were made”, adding that the fallout of the incident continues to make life difficult for comedians.

He also accused Allahbadia of not trying to understand this side of the issue, and urged him to stop portraying himself as a “nice guy”, instead asking him to accept responsibility and feel ashamed.

Kamra didn’t hold back in his criticism, adding, “You’re a contraceptive for creativity, stop milking this & go back to what you do best which is being a hurdle for upward social change while FraudCasting & clout chasing (sic).”

What was the controversy about?

The issue dates back to 2025, when Allahbadia appeared on Samay Raina’s show India’s Got Latent. During the episode, he made remarks about parents and sex that many viewers found offensive. The show also featured popular creators like Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh and Apoorva Mukhija.

Although the episode was later taken down, clips continued to circulate online, sparking widespread backlash. The controversy soon went beyond social media, with the matter being raised in Parliament and multiple police complaints filed against those associated with the show. Eventually, all episodes were removed from the streaming platform.

Allahbadia had issued a public apology following the controversy, after which he and others associated with India’s Got Latent went silent for a few weeks. The creators later resumed their respective work, gradually returning to their platforms as the situation settled, even as discussions around the incident continued.
