At the 98th Academy Awards, a brief interaction between Kylie Jenner and Pauline Chalamet, the sister of Timothée Chalamet, turned into one of the most talked-about clips from the night, with social media users analysing every second of it.
The ceremony, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, was already an emotional evening for Timothée. Widely tipped to win Best Actor, the star ultimately lost the award to Michael B. Jordan for his performance in Sinners. However, the conversation online soon shifted away from the awards themselves to a moment involving Timothée’s sister and his girlfriend.
Videos circulating across social media show Pauline, 34, approaching her younger brother inside the theatre shortly before the ceremony began. Timothée stood up to greet her, and the siblings exchanged smiles.
In the clip, Pauline then gestures toward the crowd nearby. Around the same time, Kylie, 28, appears to try to get Pauline’s attention with animated hand movements, including reaching out in what seemed like an attempt to hug her.
The short interaction quickly spread across X (formerly Twitter), where viewers replayed the moment and debated whether the exchange appeared awkward or simply misunderstood.
One user wrote, “Please, this interaction between Kylie Jenner and Pauline Chalamet looks so fake,” while another commented, “Uhm awkward. Have they never met before ?” A third user added, “Pauline hates all the things the Kardashians stand for… so I’m sure it’s the first time meeting.”
Body language expert Judi James later weighed in on the clip while speaking to the Daily Mail, suggesting the exchange appeared more formal than warm.
“The greetings between Timothee and his sister and Kylie look full of perfunctory signals and expressions of deep surprise and even shock, as though she’s an unexpected arrival at the event,” she began.
“Timothee and his sister look polite rather than excited and effusive in terms of using touch and affection signals. He bends in to greet her politely, but there’s no close sibling hugging here, and despite the fact that her man is standing to do the greeting, Kylie seems to be distracted,” she said.
According to James, Kylie’s reaction after noticing Pauline also stood out. “Her eyebrows steeple, her eyes widen, and her mouth falls open as she stretches one hand out in the kind of small flapping that would normally pull someone in for a kiss. She gets up to greet her, but the greetings are rather quick and awkward-looking with little apparent reaction from Timothee’s sister beyond the polite,” she notes.
Although the interaction lasted only a few seconds during the ceremony, the internet has already turned it into one of the evening’s most dissected moments.
