Soon after the announcement of the new corporate drama ‘Family Business’, the show has sparked conversations online. Some viewers began comparing it to global hits such as ‘Succession’ and ‘Billions’. Director and co-creator Hansal Mehta has firmly dismissed these parallels, calling them “lazy comparisons” and clarifying that a corporate setting does not make one story a replica of another.
Hansal Mehta addresses the comparisons
Hansal Mehta stressed that ‘Family Business’ is a completely original Indian story. While he acknowledged his admiration for international shows in the genre, he underlined that the series draws heavily from India’s own corporate realities. According to him, the narrative is shaped by family dynamics, power struggles and socio-cultural layers unique to the country. He emphasised that the Netflix series has its own voice and identity, standing confidently on its own without borrowing from global templates.
Inside the ruthless corporate battle
At the heart of ‘Family Business’ lies a high-stakes power struggle. A visionary billionaire mentors a rising tycoon to take charge of India’s largest conglomerate. Months later, the successor is abruptly removed, prompting the mentor to reclaim control. Refusing to fade away, the ousted heir launches a fierce counterattack. What follows is a brutal succession war—secrets unravel, alliances crumble and legacies turn personal. Blood ties clash with ambition, threatening to destroy one of India’s most respected business empires. The official description captures the tone of the series: “Family Business explores the deeply complicated and messy personal relationships that define every boardroom battle of a family of tycoons. What happens when inheritance becomes expectation, and legacies collide? It’s a ride unlike any other in a world never seen before. We’re excited for audiences to get their first glimpse of this world through Next on Netflix, and we look forward to revealing more of the story in the months ahead.”
